You might do better to buy bulbs that will grow well in this country. I get Isle of Wight stock as they are quite close to us, but they seem to grow pretty well all over the UK. You may be able to buy them as 'eating ' garlic, but more likely you will have to look for them as corms to grow on.

How do you know when to harvest? Mine went in rather late....

The tops start dying back and there should be bulb under the soil. Or a gloopy mess of white rot in my cases.

if they start to try to flower one can cut the flower stalks off to give a couple more weeks but it doesnt seem to make much difference so i would agree that when the leaves start to die back or the start of blooming is time to harvest .

if they are crisp and green like a spring onion they are quite nice ,mine were more like a sad damp pencil with a desperate bud on the top

The Autumn equinox is on 22nd September 2016 at 14:21. Time to start thinking about next year's garlic.

Ours grew well this year in our new garden but didn't dry well even after lifting and leaving in the sun for a few days. We did have a fair bit of rain and general dampness at harvest time. Next years crop will be given more room and ridged to see if that makes any difference.

when i had quite a lot i found a couple of days outside drying to evict the wildlife and then loose netted indoors worked well .

I came across a description of Picardy Wight this year, "Adapted to cooler and wetter conditions, will grow anywhere in the UK that has proved a challenge to other garlic.". So we are trying that alongside Solent Wight. Cheapest supplier I found was Kings.

Cutting it fine but King's have quite an impressive offer, presumably clearing out their stock, 4.50 for 5 types of normal garlic and few elephant cloves. Worth a punt if you forgot to buy/plant in Autumn I would say. https://www.kingsseeds.com/Products/Vegetables/Garlic/Garlic-Collection-Offer

I'm looking at what garlic to get and I was thinking of maybe Red Duke Garlic. Has anyone grown this? Or if people have recommendations as to what they have grown in the past your thoughts are much appreciated. Also where do you guys buy from? Thanks.

not about type of garlic but good soil, sheltered, full sun with decent drainage should be considerations when choosing a bed for them. if the weather works ok next year the garlic bed can become the late beans bed rotations are good, iirc there are some ace publications about em.
