Yeah, that was my slightly unflattering assessment, too .

I seem to recall having a fairly extensive discussion with you on this a few months ago?

Go on your own. Afternoon session with tea anc cake and a free booklet - 50 or 60 quid. Get together a starter kit - flatpack house for 3 or four birds, feeder, drinker, food and two pullets for a reasonable price available for those on the course.

I don't think it's always a case of more money than sense with the eglu customer.
It appears to be really well marketed and presented and the whole set-up looks pretty foolproof.
And accessable.
And it doesn't look out of place in a suburban garden and is easy on the neighbours eye.
I would have stumped up if it had been around when I lived in my suburban semi purely because I wouldn't have had the first idea of where to start otherwise.
I'd have paid over the odds for the hand-holding. That's what you should cash in on.

Agree, but would add why not do both.

Do an eglu course, and then your own one. You can still show the eglu at your own course

Think there is a definate market for courses - I do them and they are always popular, but Im careful with my pricing. If you want we can discuss setting one up and getting your customers some funding? This always makes it more attractive. Your no competition to me - too far away....
Let me know.

The Omlet thing has kick-started my brain again from being bogged down in existing stuff. I will get something together so you can pull it apart when I see you!

Thanks for your input everyone - I feel very reassured!

Hard to judge I think. The advantage of the Omlet/Eglu route is that you've preselected for customers with more money than sense.
What do kirstyfern and lorrainelovesplants charge?

I charge £10 for a 2 hour course, including handling session.
I don't do any food or drink.
I could easily make it a whole day with lunch and spend the morning on theory and the afternoon showing people all the different birds, housing, etc, people are charging £45-£50 for this.
TBH I find 2 hours PLENTY, they get a booklet to go home with to read as well, more than this isn't absorbed.*
Most Eglu people charge £15 - £20 and give you tea and biscuits, one local lady learnt from me and now does almost exactly my talk and charges £15, LOL! Omlet take a commission on bookings - 10% ? Plus give you a commission on any Eglus sold - and since most people going have booked through Omlet there is a nice profit to be made!

*edited to add - you will get ENDLESS emails / calls for advice FOREVER once they have been to a session - even if they go on to buy the birds cheaper at auction / garden centre

Where in the country are you, people sniff at the £10 I charge!!!

Have a look on my site to see what I put in my starter kits, should give you an idea, I tend to do housing to order only as it is expensive and bulky to keep in stock.

DON'T DO 2 PULLETS - hens are communal animals, you need 3 or more, please!

Yes, I always try to keep at least 3 in the deep freeze for that very reason

I don't think £15 is enough. But I think £60 might be too much. I dunno.

I did a day's intro to sheep-keeping (no wrangling involved), mostly theory-based and quite "dry" ... was £75 including lunch IIRC ... it WAS about 6 years ago now.

Don't even THINK about doing this for less than £10 an hour. You'll need some level of public liability insurance (in case some eejit falls and breaks a leg or something ), so need to cover that cost (not that it's terribly expensive, just needs to be factored-in) as well as your time. If you're giving them a hand-out, remember printing costs, too.

Work out your costs assuming you've got "groups of one" then 3 or 4 will give you a nice profit.

I know someone who could make you Gypsy caravan-style chicken houses for a LOT less than those we've all seen online

I'd suggest a combined course, for couples. One can do the chicken keeping with you, the other can build a coop with your OH. If you have all the bits cut to size beforehand it wouldn't take a huge amount of time.

Those Eglu things are a bit of a ripoff, it seems to me.
