My mum has a plant which was bought some years ago as a kiwi fruit. It turned out to be not quite a kiwi fruit: it puts out small hairless fruit.
Best guess is actinidia arguta issai.
The fruit has a mixed reception: it's given some an unpleasant sensation in the back of the throat and someone else reported a bad stomach after eating quite a lot.
It's quite prolific so it would be good to find something to do with it. Not tried jam yet.

Any helpful thoughts? No rush, it's done for this year.

get a definite id. it cant be very toxic if most have survived and only a few have a bad meal. caution and perhaps the right recipes seem a good way to proceed.

You may be able to get an ID from the RHS at Wisley if you or your parents are members.

I grow Issai ( though mine is small, it isn't smoothskinned, being more like a normal large kiwi.)

They take a while to ripen, I pick them in November at the time the leaves are falling, and start to eat them around Christmas time - they keep for about two months after that in a cool place, then begin to rot inside.

This year being sunnier they may ripen sooner, but its easy to tell as they start to soften. I have hundreds of fruits so can do tasting tests too.

The vine, like all my kiwis is very rampant, covering about 20 feet in all directions from the trunk above and below ground.

If that blob is a fruit it looks much smaller than mine, which is the size of a damson. I'll take a pic tomorrow. The leaves aren't right either.

It's been a while since I've seen it myself, but I don't recall the fruit being much smaller than damsons... unless they're big damsons.

this is my Issai - mind you I have had quite a lot of mis-labelled kiwis from different nurseries so I wouldn't stake my life on it being correct

Harvesting the mini-kiwis this week. They should ripen in the fruit store by mid December.

Look good. You have loads of them this year then. Do you just eat them raw or make them into something.
