This would eliminate the last concerns about battery life. Notably the car was a later Model S with a more reliable battery pack than earlier cars. It can't be emphasised enough how young the modern history of EV batteries is. From nothing 20 years ago to where we are today. The development curve for making a really real world reliable for decades battery hasn't even spanned that time period.

SAKUU PCC cheap high density solid state 370wh/kg using a lot less packaging. Not so great on cycle life, but game changing. But on the subject of life cycle a 1000 lifetime might be poor, but in a 400 range car thats 400,000 miles. It really wouldn't matter that much if it was 500 cycles!

Production of the WeLion 360 wh/kg ( update 260 wh/kg at pack level) semi solid-state battery continues to increase. These are 150kwh batteries but at a $40,000 cost. I have no information on how that cost might reduce, but I'd invite people to consider that a 50kwh battery of this type would give a car a decent range and it is not at all unreasonable to assume volume production would halve costs.

Liquid air energy storage plant being built in the UK. Claimed to be economical at scale. As ever this sort of development begs the question of what is "really" economic? Ripping coal from the ground in Wales was nicely economic for mine owners, but the slag heaps are not economic for us now. Lithium and Cobalt are also "nicely economic" and not the utter horror fossil fuel companies would have us believe, but even materials that will be recycled come at an environmental and social cost.

I have no information on how that cost might reduce, but I'd invite people to consider that a 50kwh battery of this type would give a car a decent range and it is not at all unreasonable to assume volume production would halve costs.

Ripping coal from the ground in Wales was nicely economic for mine owners, but the slag heaps are not economic for us now. Read an interesting article in Chemistry World yesterday about materials that have pseudocapacitive properties. Still very much in development, but if they could ever be utilised it would mean recharging might take as short a time as a minute or two.

I really can't get excited about much faster charging, we are already seeing 15 minute times and whilst it's a different mind set, when it comes to a car that you won't need to fast charge 95% of the time, fast charging really does not matter that much.

Think there may well end up as more to it than that. In one city they are already using it to recharge buses as they wait at a bus stop to pick up passengers. Combined with batteries, it could give a really sensible way to charge vehicles and remove the problem of recharging. Even 15 minutes is quite a long time to wait when you can refill an ICE car in a couple of minutes.

Yep. If you can do really fast charges of a battery that is small enough to travel just between stops then everything becomes cheaper

I think it is one of the things that puts people off the idea of EV is having to wait about whilst it charges when on a long journey. I think the worries are unfounded, it is easy enough to organise charging at food breaks etc, we should all take a rest from the road etc. but still it bothers some. it would reassure if there was a 'as fast as petrol' option.

When my brother comes up here... nearly 500 miles... whether it is by EV car or motorbike he has an overnight stay halfway ( so full charge) and a cuppa stop or two each day, giving a short top-up charge.
He always arrives with plenty of leeway....last time on the motorbike (an Energica) he arrived with 70 miles to spare.

I could do a 500 mile road trip in my EV with only about a 25 minute stop at a rapid charger.

It's not gain if you spend 5 minutes at a charger rather than 3 minutes at the pump and then have to park up for the toilets. Latest study that suggests little damage is done fast charging a modern EV. It is not however split out by battery chemistry or charging to 100% rather than 80% and of course the data for fast charging remains sparse as few people regularly fast charge.

Liquid air energy storage plant being built in the UK. Claimed to be economical at scale. As ever this sort of development begs the question of what is "really" economic? Ripping coal from the ground in Wales was nicely economic for mine owners, but the slag heaps are not economic for us now. Lithium and Cobalt are also "nicely economic" and not the utter horror fossil fuel companies would have us believe, but even materials that will be recycled come at an environmental and social cost.
