Where in the country are you, people sniff at the £10 I charge!!!

Sussex, just like is says under my name. Suppose it depends on which bit of Essex they are coming from to your course. Thurrock is chav central after all.

I did a day's intro to sheep-keeping (no wrangling involved), mostly theory-based and quite "dry" ... was £75 including lunch IIRC ... it WAS about 6 years ago now.

Don't even THINK about doing this for less than £10 an hour. You'll need some level of public liability insurance (in case some eejit falls and breaks a leg or something ), so need to cover that cost (not that it's terribly expensive, just needs to be factored-in) as well as your time. If you're giving them a hand-out, remember printing costs, too.

Work out your costs assuming you've got "groups of one" then 3 or 4 will give you a nice profit.

I know someone who could make you Gypsy caravan-style chicken houses for a LOT less than those we've all seen online

I'd suggest a combined course, for couples. One can do the chicken keeping with you, the other can build a coop with your OH. If you have all the bits cut to size beforehand it wouldn't take a huge amount of time.

Those Eglu things are a bit of a ripoff, it seems to me.

Could you make/sell patterns for the coops as well?

I have a prototype coop. I'm planning on selling them flatpack, I just need to get my act together to cut them out. I guess I could sell a plan, too, but there doesn't seem a great deal of point - there's a lot of them out there.

Aah, didn't know/see about the flat packs, that's a better idea.

I'm going to have a couple on the lawn when the PYO fruit season starts, to interest people. It's going to be a beautiful surprise for Ma

There's City Cottage in Bolton, they do chicken courses with Eglus, and other stuff like sausage and cheese making and beekeeping. I get the occasional newsletter from them, some more interesting/useful than others. Sorry can't find the link - maybe a mod could??

Thanks, Maryf!

Just an update - Omlet HAVE now sent me an email saying I *can* run courses through them, so I have just transferred the details on my website across to them. I don't know how much business I will get from them, though, as their average beginner's course seems to be an hour and a half or two hours and be ten to fifteen pounds. I've sorted out something that is three hours and thirty pounds so therefore I'm going to be more expensive.

I'm looking at eglus on ebay to see if I can get a second hand one to show Omlet people coming on the course as it seems like one of the reasons they might want to go on a session is to have a look at one in the flesh.

So, I've done a webpage and decided on some dates for both An Introduction to chicken-keeping and a Hatch and Despatch course, both in Somerset in the spring.

I'd like to thank Lorrainelovesplants for her advice and guidance on this - she also runs courses, in Cornwall, and has been a mine of information. See her website here!

I hope the Omlet link brings you LOTS of customers who wouldn't have used you for your own course.

In fact, I hope that the Omlet course leads on to people wanting a 2nd, "just by you" course

Thank you, Sean

How much would people pay for a three hour course, then? Including tea-and-cake in the middle and some leaflets to go home with?

£25? Or is that too much?

I've only just seen this Chez but if you were prepared to dress kind of scruffy, wear glasses, put a bit of weight on and have wild curly hair, a bit like this chap then you'd be able to get ten times that amount for your time and experience.
Seriously though, £25.00 would be a snip and probably too cheap.
