I may have asked this before as it seems to keep coming up, but I've got half a bag of plaster that has been sitting around for too long to be useful. I'm tempted to throw it on the walls in the basement since they are so rough that anything would improve it, but it's finishing plaster, so I think that would not work well.

Ah yes... and the answer was "no" which is why I did not remember it.

The search engine seems to have a habit of not working, so I have a habit of not using it...

Old plaster was often used for filling big cracks or filling in after chasing out for pipes ,wiring etc,mix 3 to 1 with sand.

I have used it as a fill between paving stones (crazy paving) when buying builders sand sounded too expensive... Keeps the weeds down too due to the high lime content.

Couldn't say for sure, not knowing the chemical side of things, but in moderation it wouldn't hurt.

It may do, but I would go easy in case some of it is still active. Don't apply where plants are present as if any reacts, it will burn them. We buried a lot of old plaster (about 100 years old) under some borders in our first house. We managed to grow azaleas on top by feeding them with tea leaves, so I don't think that was very alkaline.

I could be really drastic and get scientific about it: do a soil analysis before and after measured quantities of plaster...

I couldn't comment on pros/cons of putting it in your soil, but a few thoughts..

Gypsum waste is now banned from landfill because it gives off hydrogen sulphide when mixed with biodegradable waste.

Page 3 section 2 tells you whats in it ......

Personally I'd loose it in a load of hardcore that I was tipping or loose it among hardcore for a base.
