We have had some brilliant cod fishing in the Bristol Channel. Mr Shan caught a 9lb beastie.

You need a large outside oven to cook that.

Don't you start!!!

We ended up salting it for half an hour because it firms up the texture and gives a better flavour and then we hot smoked it. Absolutely delicious.

That's broken my dream. You were at the kids school last night, Shan, talking about fishing.

Was I somewhat inebriated?

*cough*. You had to lean on the reception desk to stay upright. And you were wearing a very nice 1950s netted skirt in black fabric with large silver spots. Apparently you had just moved to the area and were touring the school. My subconscious is a mystery to me sometimes.

cold knapp near barri used to be a decent winter cod beach ,tis a very rapid drop off into deep water and the base of the shingle (20m down maybe 30 out (ish)) has provided some good uns

penarth pier can be ok at some tides but i cant remember if it is spring or neaps

church island at the end of rhossili beach has cod and/or bass at high tide so take two rods and suitable kit as you will be on for a few hours til the water goes away again

We are fortunate enough to be fishing off the back of our little sail boat. We also caught 2 Thornback Skate. Very tasty! Especially with a white pepper and fennel crust.

That's a decent cod from the Bristol Channel! I had a couple just after Christmas but they were only 3-4lb.

I have had a couple of thornies while cod fishing and agree they are really good eats - very underrated IMO.

Il try find post and get a pic of it . Was a big sea pig. Biggest I seen down here and south coast was nearly 40lb on the cod . Same as that 40lb conger or some hefty weight from Ilfracombe iirc

When those tides are running in the Channel, a 2lb doggie can feel like 20lb!
