I have sheds full of accumulated "stuff" that I need to clear. I used to take stuff to the tip when I was younger, fitter and had a larger van (no commercial lettering on it, and no trailer, twin-axle or otherwise, they do you for that.)
In the past, over 30 years ago, and not this property, when I was clearing my parents' house and garden of "stuff" prior to selling it, I hired a small skip which was a joy.
What are the pros and cons of doing this now? What isn't one allowed to put in it (toxic waste obviously). Do they go through it and charge you accordingly? Obviously electricals, etc have a place at the tip so they wouldn't go in, but as to sorting it all - well, time and health is running out.
I'd appreciate some advice (and comfort)!
I'm talking about the Ceredigion area. |

Round here, they deliver, you fill it way way way above the fill to here line, using doors as a giant version of how you raid the salad bar at Pizza Hut, then they take it away. Anything goes.
But it's all landfill tax so expensive. OMB will have a much more sensible answer but I suspect it depends on your local supplier. |
You won't be laughing when the driver levels it off and leaves it on your driveway - or just leaves the whole thing.
I don't use skips myself as I've a tipper and carriers license.
Yep it's all about the landfill tax though.
Lowri - Just tell them it's household waste / house clearance - they'll advise you on what can't go in, what they'd appreciate separating, or what incurs extra charges.
Different companies, different rules.
Generally no asbestos, fluorescent tubes or fridges.
Sometimes no plasterboard or keep it separate.
Possibly no TV's.
No fires
Some places I tip, now have supplementary charges for mattresses and sofas and ridiculous prices for TV and fridge disposal. The rules and restrictions increase every year.
If it can be recycled or disposed of other than in landfill, then most skip companies will extract the bulk of it because of the landfill cost. So if taking recyclables to the recycling centre is too much grief just chuck it in the skip and you can still sleep sound(ish). |
