Does anyone use those gadgets for hammering in fence posts - metal tubes with handles on either side that you drop over the fence post. I am wondering if it's worth investing my meagre salary in one of them? I (ok we) use a sledge hammer usually and then can't move the following day and the posts are so high it's very difficult to start them off straight... fencing, bl****y horses grumble grumble

I want to do a really good job then protect it all with leccy stuff

yes ...good kit . get one .. make one . safe and effective ,i could not say that for a big hammer . hammer post hand . that stings ..

I've used one and didn't think it was that much better than using a sledge-hammer. Is there someone near you with a proper one that goes on a tractor which you could borrow? Or get them to do the job in exchange for money/goods?

tractor thing good but these things are so much safer than a hammer i will nod ,you hit it . or a broken wrist or foot hammers mash things . two can work in harmony with a post driver

Much better than a hammer- get a decent sized one (at least 19kg), as it'll be less work than using something lighter. You'll also get a lot less damage to the posts & getting them in straight should be easier. £44 + VAT from Spaldings, £40 delivered on ebay

Yeah We use one also.. Find them really useful. I use i to start the post off, and then smack it with the hammer just to be sure.. and to prove i'm a man with a big hammer

Also, you can't miss with them either, and the end doesn't come off

Hey Rob, I missed once .. Raised it up too far, caught the edge of the post and jarred my shoulder!! Has to be one doesn't there

We have one, and the best thing is one person can use it in an emergency. The hardest thing for a short arse is getting the post basher over the top, when you have done a few and your arms are giving up

Definitely better than a sledgehammer. You will still be crippled the next day, but you won't have any split fence post ends We have one if you want to try it out before investing your hard-earned cash ...

Thank you all - and Judith I am coming by your place Monday (thats asking for snow, car breaking down or some other minor disaster....) I might borrow yours or might just go what the hell!! Seeing as how we have to buy a "new" car this week - I get sort of gung ho about purchasing things when we have to buy a big item! (Hence taking Stacey up on her camera offer!)

I will have a transit with me - so if anyone needs anything shifting between Aberystwyth and St Asaph... (Bringing stuff back for work so can't do it the other way)
