and take care of strangers in a strange land

i do not know if that was ignorance +need or a lookalike that is harmless at "home" and DC's look enough like it to fool any but the most expert(maybe with a microscope)

there is at least one china/europe lookalike confusion that has killed folk on a few occasions

looks like as found in some field guides is a useful id tool to avoid some common mistakes

on a happier theme tis cep season

Death caps and parasol mushrooms in Britain are sufficiently different for me as a not too expert to distinguish. One guide to death caps is that they have the remains of a sheath at the bottom of the stem and round the edge of the cap. Parasols have none at the bottom and a loose ruff on the stem. Colours tend to be different too.

That is very sad.

I still won't go mushroom picking as I just do not want to take the chance, as my knowledge is so poor on shrooms. Which does gall me as I'd love to be able to pick wild ones.

Just start with easy ones, and only after being confirmed by another.

yep,

look these up

giant puffball, 20cm is edible and nice, more importantly it is a definite id that eliminates all the small and sometimes rather nasty species
20cm will show itself as well

velvet shank, on a dying tree, colours, frosty weather. very easy id . and few dangeroos things live on trees
dump the stalks, the caps are wonderful fried or in something

i have less than one species per year of my life, since i started i try to add one every year

most are food, a few are shaman (by a few i might think more than most )
i could do livia, but that is a very different sort of breakfast to my feasts

learn the easy mistakes, a few are very nasty ones
never be bold

there are nice shrooms that will be forever friends once you are introduced

the tinder and knife stropping ones are fun

Thanks DPack.

I have to say, I do know the puffball, as I saw HFW collecting them on one of his programs. Like you say, easy to identify.

I just need to be brave and try and find some that there is no mistaking.

One day, hopefully.

We do a few but are pretty conservative about things. I think its one of those things where you really could do with a mentor.
